'We are Rights Committed'

In April 2022, we received our 'Rights Respecting Schools' Silver Award!

Who is it organised by?

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working to ensure that children across the world access and enjoy their full range of human rights as set out in the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. (UNCRC)

In the UK, Unicef is working with 5,000 schools through the Rights Respecting Schools programme, so we are joining a significant and growing movement for change in the way children experience their school and their childhood once again.

What is it all about?

The award is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The programme started in 2006. Schools involved in the award have reported a positive impact on relationships and well-being leading to a range of achievements within the school.

Most people in the UK have very little knowledge of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Most children don’t really know what their rights are. As the school community ~ adults and children/young people learn about rights they have and also explore why it is so important to respect and value your rights and, equally, the rights of those around you.

We will explore together as a school how the rights of the child relate to and support our aims and values as a community and how they underpin our practice.

What's next?

After being successful in achieving the 'Silver: Rights Aware' award, we will now work towards achieving the 'Gold: Rights Respecting' award.

Our aims are:

  1. Teaching and learning about rights: for the whole school community through training, curriculum, assemblies, topics, focus days and weeks, displays.
  2. Teaching and learning through rights: by modelling rights respecting language and attitudes, and making decisions that involve students.
  3. Being ambassadors for the rights of others: developing as rights respecting citizens.
